saying Hi.

Hi all we are still in lockdown and hopefully like me your managing to cope with it
I being in a motorhome by myself does bring its little problems like nobody to talk to for the best part of a full week sure I have the internet and Zoom etc but nothing beats a face to face conversation at the end of the day.
I have been self-isolating in the same layby now for 32 days and have only travelled  28 miles that's 4 journeys to the shops.
Being in the open brings its pleasures like all the wildlife so many different types of birds in this area and a lot of them are in the small woods that are to one side of me. Ideal for me sat in the van with my binoculars
On the other side is open countryside stretching over to brown willy on Bodmin moor and well beyond in most directions along with my map and compass I can find most other places as well as the crow flys brown willy is about 35 miles from my park up.
The internet is a godsend in times like these and my interest and learning curve in all sorts of things has improved on end however my English and spelling is still atrous you should have seen this before I used Grammarly never mind were not all born to be clever sods are we.
I also watch a bit more TV now mostly in the evening being mindful of my battery usage when the suns out not a problem at all it does charge on daylight as opposed to sunlight so I have a good genny which I use every other two days and boost the battery power if there is something on in the day time I will run the Van of the genny so saving my battery power for the evening time.
My spending in the supermarket has also gone right down I don't and never did panic-buy I do eat quite well buying and eating more fresh veg than anything else and keeping cans of processed food in for emergency along with doing a bit of baking things like beer bread, sourdough, potato cakes, fish cakes, oatcakes doing most of these in my skillet pan need to get a dutch oven now.

  1. Hi Steve, I've followed your blog a few years ago when I was thinking about doing the van life, I was looking at a few blogs and youtube channels on van life and every single one of them has ended up back in bricks and mortar all except you. I was wondering how people doing the van life was doing in this pandemic and would have thought a lot would be on some sort of campsite, but I can see your in a lay by, surely the local rozzers would be giving you grief ?

  2. Hi Nice Question, and thank you for following my blog which has been left to stagnate for a while now anyway to answer your question.
Firstly it takes a lot of guts to walk away from the comfort of bricks and mortar.
A lot of people that have homes are mostly looking for an adventure and turn to buying a motorhome thinking its a house on wheels lets live in it.
The one thing you should do is spend at least twelve months in the motor-home full time.
You would of read in my blog that I did a full year plus living in my self build doing everything and only going in my house to work 9-5 on computer treating it just like an office.
I slept outside the house or the layby just around the corner my weekends where spent less than a mile away in a local park this was all research to see if I could cope with that type of life.
The people that give the van-life up did so because.
    1. they did not sell the home that was their safety valve just in case van live was not for them this tells me that the idea was just a whim.
2, No research again a half-hearted attempt at doing something you have to want this lifestyle to make it work.
All campsites are closed you can not get on anywhere so there are no facilities available for travellers to dump the grey waste or black waste all the public toilets are closed this alone is enough to drive you mad
Iam luckly friends that allow me to lift the sewer cover to depose of my waste.
With regards to the police, how can they move you on and send you Home if you do not Have a Home (bricks and mortar ) having care-of address is required by Law this allows them the Police and the taxman to send letters also you need an Address on your driving licence this can be any address.

  3. Thanks for the reply Steve. Yes I think a lot of people just watch a few videos and read a few blogs and see the freedom of the open road and nothing else, like I said in my first comment you are the only van dweller still doing it who I followed, which kind of makes me think that it's not really a long term solution for most people. probably me included, but that's not to say that I don't enjoy seeing how other people try it, I know on reading your blog again lately that Your disappointed in the response rate but people don't tend to follow blogs as much these days or stay in the background and don't follow but read the blog, I guess what I'm trying to say is don't be too disheartened as you say you can always look back on this blog and how far you have come rather like an online diary, you've visited some wonderful places and photographed a lot of them and I for one appreciate the time you've taken to do so.
